In a vast field, in Russia, eight characters, like small islands of loneliness meet together. Among them: the old professor Serebriakov, come to withdraw himself in the countryside, in the house of his first wife. This arrival disturbs the peaceful life of Sonia, the girl of the professor, and Voinitsky, who both exploit the field . Moreover, the attention of the close relatives, including Voinitsky, crystallizes soon on Elena, the second and very desirable wife.
